Call for the removal of Asbestos from school buildings
Since the dangerous material asbestos was banned from being used in building, there have been varying reports on the frequency of incidences of mesothelioma, the lung cancer that the material can cause in those who are exposed to it. One of the strongest debates involves the question of safely removing the material from public buildings such as hospitals and schools. Recently, there has been a call for action by the National Union of Teachers (NUT) for the removal of asbestos from all schools within the UK. A programme by the BBC, “Inside Out” screened in January 2009, made a Freedom of Information request to the government and discovered that in the South East of England, the presence of asbestos within school buildings was shockingly high, remaining in 90% of schools.
