What the Death of 2v2 Means
With Blizzard officially making 2v2 competition near-worthless this season without being able to earn titles, shoulders, or top tier weapons from it, players are forced into playing 3v3 and 5v5 if they want anything meaningful out of arena now. Despite how incredibly… gay, for lack of a better term… 2v2 could be, it was still far and away the most popular bracket to play in because it was always far easier to coordinate just you and your partner logging on for games rather than having to schedule three people, much less five, at a given time.
At the recent Blizzcon Q/A, one of the game designers stated that far fewer people were participating in arena in WotLK compared to TBC because they felt it was “more hardcore” and that with the new MMR system, players would be “matched with teams that are going to beat you.” I, however, disagree with this logic entirely and feel that arena participating took a nosedive in WotLK because of how the PvP aspects of the game changed. On top of that, Blizzard has the worst ways of trying to make a spec viable. Simply put, they use this philosophy about Wow Gold:
Destruction warlocks are the best example of this. When they were perfectly viable in the right setups, albeit having its own unique weaknesses, Blizzard felt that the spec was a little under-represented compared to Affliction, and thus, after some Affliction nerfs in a previous patch, they decide to buff Chaos Bolt and Immolate (and thus Incinerate) damage significantly. And if it isn’t a damage buff that’s applied to a spec in order to buff it, it’s probably a mortal strike. As if the game needed more of Wow Gold.
The point here is that I feel removing all significant rewards from the 2v2 bracket was a mistake. Titles I can agree with but gear, not so much. Shoulders are only a vanity item and 2200 3v3 rating can be reached by basically anyone that’s capable of getting 2200 2v2 for the most part, so I really think they should reconsider on that end of the spectrum.
